"If it weren't for the coffee, I'd have no identifiable personality whatsoever." - David Letterman
We’ve done a run-down of Edinburgh’s coffee scene before, but new great cafe's are opening all the time and so, with exams taking over my life right now, here’s a quick run down of all the newer spots that didn’t quite make it on the list last year! Oh, and as always, these are all totally instagrammable too.
To look at the original list, check out the last Edinburgh coffee guide here!

Colony Coffee
Look up a picture of Portugal on google and you’ll see statues, murals, and colourful mosaics that are extremely aesthetic. Thankfully, Colony have decided to bring all of that Portuguese flair to the inside of an Edinburgh café. Add a selection of Portuguese cakes and pastries and you’ve got as good a spot to refuel as any!
Baba Budan
Stop when you get to their front door: great food, artisanal coffee, and homemade doughnuts. Situated 2 minutes away from Waverley station in the city centre, Baba Budan has a constantly changing selection of doughnuts (including a vegan option) that make for a perfect pick me up or snack for a train journey. Plus, I mean they’re vegan doughnuts, they totally count as healthy, right?
Lowdown
We can’t really have a list of Edinburgh café’s without having one of the Disloyal 7 spots on the list. In case you didn’t know, the Disloyal 7 are a collective of coffee shops with a shared loyalty card where you are tasked with collecting a stamp from each one before redeeming your free caffeine fix at whichever one of the seven you like the most! Isn’t that awesome?!
Lowdown, on George Street then, is the perfect way to spend a break from shopping in Edinburgh’s New Town.
Machina Espresso
With locations in both Newington and Tollcross, Machina can keep you topped-up wherever you are. The only downside is that the wifi gets turned off during the lunch hours so not the best place to camp out and get some work done. But then again, they do a morning deal for a coffee and a croissant sooo they still come out on top.
Spoon
Tucked away on the first floor of a Nicholson Street building and with an interior that feels more like an eclectic living-room than a café, is Spoon, a bistro-esque take on coffee and food. Oh, and they have the same coffee cups as me, so I officially think they are extra super cool!
